Employee Spotlight: Senior Accountant Matthew Perea

Matthew Perea

Meet Matthew: MBA, Dodgers fan and master number cruncher

Matthew Perea loves crunching numbers almost as much as he loves the Dodgers. As a senior accountant for South Coast Water District, West Covina-born Matthew puts his extensive experience and education, including an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management and bachelor’s degree from DeVry University, both with an emphasis in accounting, to work for District customers every day.

Matthew was inspired to pursue a career in government by the desire to apply his skills in service of a greater good. “Plus, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of when accounts reconcile! What can I say? It’s the accountant in me.”

Since he joined the District in 2014, Matthew has seized every opportunity to learn and grow, especially this year, says his manager, Controller Amy Doucet. “Matthew’s hard work and dedication helped the finance department move forward during a time of being short staffed,” Doucet says. “He stepped up and went beyond what was expected of his role, all while keeping a smile on his face. His positive attitude radiates across departments."

In fact, his stellar performance recently netted Matthew the District’s distinguished Top Performer of the Year Award.

In addition to performing his senior accountant duties, Matthew’s accomplishments this year include assisting the District’s Chief Financial Officer with the development of a new format for budget preparation, performing payroll duties while the payroll position was vacant, and assisting with accounts payable for both South Coast Water District and JRWSS. Matthew also trained new employees and consultants, reviewed invoices and reconciliations, and prepared month-end schedules, including the District’s Key Success Factors.

A combination of education and on-the-job training helped him prepare for my current role. Matthew’s career began with a C.P.A. firm where he prepared corporate and personal tax returns, cost reports and provided other accounting services. He then went to work for a title insurance company which provided in-depth exposure to financial accounting.

When he’s not crunching numbers at the District, Matthew enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching Dodgers baseball or playing golf – he’s been hitting the links since his grandfather taught him the game at seven years old.

Thank you for your service to the District, Matthew!
